Over the past week we have worked on creating "Abbie's playroom". We stripped the wallpaper and have painted it a subtle blue and cream. It looks quite nice! She loves it too!!! She'll crawl out of any room...except her play room! She'll stay right in there and bounce away! We've had some outings since our last post. We've gone apple and pumpking picking, saw some animals in a petting zoo at the church, and put on a zebra costume to hand out candy on Halloween. Here are some pictures of our latest adventures!

Long over due...

Well...we thought we would at least try and put some pictures up. Unless my parents contest this memory, as a child I remember looking forward to adventures into new, undiscovered regions. A sleep over at grandma's house. The occassional back yard camp out. Camps. Vacations. Conferences. College. Life. New enviroments have always seemed like new stories to create and I always look forward to the next great life story to experience.

I am away as I make this post. The rocky cost of Maine is not far beyond my window. I am at "Work Camp 2006" - a highlight of my year, six years in the running now, serving underprivledged "widows and orphans" in what the biblical author, James, called an effort to experience what "religion" is all about. It is always a great experience from year to year, place to place, story to story.

It's different this year however. Being "away" suddenly seems pretty far.

Watch me eat!!!

This is my (Pilar) first time attempting to update the blog, so hang in there with me! Abbie is doing great! In the past week or two, she has blown us away with all the new things she is doing. Last Thursday, she ate pears for the first time, and loved them! I had Josh watch her like a hawk that day to make sure she had no reactions...she didn't (phew!). However, he did say she was making a lot of funny faces. Later, we found out that faces were due to 2 sharp little teeth that had popped out! She's also rolling like crazy on the floor...it's getting harder for us to leave the room. When we do, it's only a matter of seconds before we hear her "talking", to let us know that she's become stuck or rolled off her blanket. Here are some pictures of her latest adventures!

Abbie's First Swim

Now that the hot weather is rolling into town (between thunder storms), we decided we would take Abbie for a swim - her first swim. Our friends invited us up to a condo they were vacationing at last weekend in the northern part of New Hampshire. It was a great weekend relaxing as a family. And as you can see, even at four months Abbie has this kick back by the pool concept down pat! Abigail is twelve weeks old tomorrow. She continues to amaze us with fun new changes everyday. The most exciting has been to see her personality begin to present itself, as you can see even from the pictures. She loves to "talk" and hear her own voice. So our home is full of constant "yip, yaw, yap yap, yaw yaw yaw." Her newest thing is to cover her eyes with her arm just before it is time to go down for a nap. It's like she is saying, "guys, I can't take it any longer. No more talking. No more laughing. It's all I can take!" She is one funny kid. Enjoy the pictures!

Family Outing

We finally have nice weather again in New Hampshire. Overall I guess it has been a very mild winter, but any weather that requires a jacket is to cold in my opinion. However, Friday we saw temps around 70 degrees, so out we went for a hike at "Mine's Falls." Except for the cat, the whole family (Pilar, Abigail, Hobo and me) enjoyed a great day together. Abigail did great with the "off-roading."

What a Hair Day!

Paul Mitchell eat your heart out!

T plus Eight Weeks

Can you believe that? Abigail was eight weeks old on Sunday evening - that's two months - two whole months!! We can hardly believe that much time has passed, but alot has happened during that time.

For those of you who are not aware, the past eight weeks have been more than the typical sleepless adventure most new parents encounter. Since the c-section, Pilar has experienced a fairly difficult recovery (actually that's putting it lightly). Five days after we returned home from the hospital, it became necessary to re-open her incision and allow it to heal slowly with the help of packing as opposed to a suture. This required two trips each day to the doctor for a dressing change for just more than five weeks. Thankfully, Pilar had her final visit to the doctor last week where she was cleared with about a 95% bill of recovery. Inspite of all the challenges, she is doing well and on the mend.

Abigail is changing more and more each day. We have seen her find her smile and laughter is now a common sound. In addition she is beginning to respond to our company (sometimes that means a smile, sometimes it means a squirm, sometimes it means a squeal). She also started holding her head up on her own last week. This has been great - she can look over our shoulder and follow us with her eyes across the room! And the other day she even said, "hi daddy!" Okay, so it might have actually sounded more like "yada ha yi aah ya" but if you play it backwards in slow motion while standing upside down, you can definately hear it!

So for now, all is well. We have really appreciated all of the cards and gifts, encouragement and love that have blessed our family! Their presence has been a gift to us in many many ways. With the unexpected length of Pilar's recovery from the c-section it has been so necessary to have extra hands around the house. We never could have made our way through the past three weeks without their support. Among all of the advice we received from friends, family, the news paper delivery guy and the street sweeper were a multitude of comments along the lines of, "oh boy, the first few weeks are pretty difficult - get your rest now, you'll never get it again." Honestly in the days that led up to Abigail's arrival we grew tired of hearing that statement. But our experience (less all of Pilar's physical limitations) has really been great! Undoubtedly this has come as the result of the love, support, encouragement, and down right hard work of Glenn and Ginny. As I said, in more than one way they have been a gift to our new family.

Now however, the time has come for them to return to Pittsburgh, PA. It's up to us to see if we can do this parenting thing on our own. We'll see how it goes. A great comfort however, is knowing that a second great gift is on it's way Sunday night. My mom and sister are coming in town. Mom will be here for a week. My sister for a few days. My dad will come in on Wednesday and stay through the weekend. I just can't wait for Abigail to meet them. She's got two great sets of grand parents! Thanks for all of the love!

So as Glenn and Ginny prepare to leave, we decided to burn a CD with all of the pictures we have taken since her birth. We are officially up to 400 wonderful Kodak moments. That's right, we've taken 400 pictures of our amazing Abigail - and it continues to grow!! Thank goodness for digital cameras! Here is a new one taken just today! Wow is she precious!

Three Week Birthday is coming soon!

Can you believe Abigail is going to be three weeks old this Sunday? We're having a great time learning to be parents. Everyday is so different from the one before. She is definately keeping us on our toes!

On Wednesday we visited our Pediatrician for a two week check up. Abigail managed to regain all of the weight she lost after delivery. She was born at 7lbs. 6oz., but went home at 6lbs. 10oz. Now she's 7.6. again. Plus she's grown 1/2 inch in the past three weeks.

She continues to amaze us with new, fun discoveries every day. She is much more alert lately - making eye contact, cooing, smiling. She makes us melt at the drop of a hat.

So if I can find a free moment long enough to collect some thoughts, I'll make a post soon sharing some of the fun stories from the past two weeks! I've heard your persistent plea to see more pictures and finally we are following through. It's difficult to believe, but Abigail will be two weeks old tomorrow evening. Needless to say, each day provides numerous photo ops. She is absolutely precious and acclimating to our world quite well. I could go on and on about the developmental advances we have seen in the past week, her intellegence (Pilar just looked at this messasge and suggested we call it "alertness" instead of "intelligence" but I happen to think that the ability to open one's eyes or move one's feet at a rapid pace while having a diaper change is the sign of a bright future!). Who would have imagined when I woke up Sunday morning that before the clock struck 12, Pilar and I would receive such an amazing gift; life. We are so unbelievably blessed to introduce to you our daughter, Abigail Grace Peigh! She is healthy, beautiful, and perfect!

After a long day of laboring, at about 10:30 pm last night (January 22nd) our midwife and the attending doctor decided it would be best if we moved toward a cesarean section. Pilar was running a bit of a fever and the baby was positioned awkwardly in the birth canal so we were glad to move in this direction as well. After preparing Pilar for surgery and dressing me in an interesting blue outfit, at 11:00 we entered the OR excited to realize that within minutes we would finally meet the child we have anticipated for nine months. At 11:12 pm the team of doctors encouraged me to look beyond the head curtain that separated Pilar and I from the operation itself to call the gender – it’s a girl! The several hours that followed a still a bit of a blur. Keep checking back for more photos throughout the next few days. We’ve got a bunch to post. However, here are some vitals to peak your interest…

Abigail Grace Peigh
Born January 22nd, 2006 at 11:12 pm
7 lbs 6 oz
19.5 inches
A full head of dark hair and long eye lashes
She is very very precious!

One week down; One week to go

Just one week to go now - well, nine days. WOW! Each day we are hopeful it might be the last of our pregnancy. We're ready for this baby to come and let all of us finally meet him or her. We are trying to stay calm though, realizing we may be in for a bit more of a wait.

In addition to having another week under our belt concerning the pregnancy, Pilar also has a week under her belt in her new job. On Monday she began a new position as the Assistant Principal at Ledge Street Elementary. Though she has come home fairly exhausted each evening, she has enjoyed meeting the staff and students. The picture above greeted her on the first day!

Fourteen Days

Bags are packed. Car seat is installed. Camcorder is charged. House is clean. This waiting game is enough to drive us crazy. Fourteen days now until our "official" due date. With each passing day we watch for more signs pointing toward the inevitable, but not much has changed really. Going into the weekend, Pilar was sure we'd have a baby by Monday. Today is Monday. No baby. A moment ago Pilar was doing squats with the birthing ball. Anything it takes. We're starting to think however, that this child might just have a mind and schedule of its own. Our first lesson in parenting is a difficult reality to relax into, "we're no longer in control." I suppose we never were really, but at least the illusion was nice. That's gone and now we find ourselves staring at Pilar's belly occasionally whispering, "come on baby!" Tonight I promised it that if it came, I would set the thermostat to "hold" at 98 degrees to ensure it wouldn't be all that different here that it is "in there." We'll see if Baby Peigh takes the bait, but I wouldn't put much money on it. For now, we wait.

Blessings,
Josh

Sixteen Days

Only sixteen days now until our "official" due date. It is amazing to think how quickly this time has past. I know, I know - you veteran parents out there would like to inform us how life will only continue to speed up. It is important to note however that the pace we are currently running at seems quick enough. Thank goodness pregnancy allows people to ease into this whole thing. I can not imagine what it would be like if a baby just arrived on our front porch one day as the old "stork" tales suggest. Five more weeks and our home will be full of new sounds.

To prepare ourselves for the reality of this all, Pilar and I have been talking to one another in terms that suggest the urgency of Baby Peigh's arrival. We'll say, "in five weeks when the baby is here," or "let's put that together for when the baby is here in 37 days." When you start phrasing the reality in actual numbers that can easily be reduced it all seems to come to a remarkably clear focus.

So for now, I will leave you to your own thoughts. However, I will check back in and make another post when we are but 36 days or maybe 27 or perhaps 15 days from planning Baby Peigh's birthday! Lately we've been pouring our energy into birthing classes and the nursery. Both have been fun - the nursery slightly less shocking than the birthing class I must say. It is fun to see things come together. If you're interested in seeing some pictures of the nursery as it currently is, scroll down and click on the "flicker"(that's the box full of scrolling pictures) in the right hand margin below the "archives list." It's a good color. Warm. Inviting. Serene. Little did we know, that we were picking out a nursery color scheme. However it works great - not purple enough to be feminine, not blue enough to be masculine. So when we found out Pilar was pregnant, we decided to stick with "smokey grape."

About two months back, we assembled the crib and put it in place. And since then, that is how the room has remained. Smokey Grape with a crib. No art. No pictures. No furniture. No toys. No books. Just smokey grape with a crib.

So you can begin to see why yesterday was paramount. Upon the realization that only seven weeks remain until we will welcome Baby Peigh into our world, we decided it was time to kick into full gear preparing the nursery. To help us accomplish this task, we made a visit to the wonderland of home furnishings - IKEA.

If you're not familiar with IKEA, you really are missing out on something incredible. I liken the experience to the first time I rode "The Beast" at Kings Island. When you board the adventure, you think you're in for a nice little ride similar to the other roller coasters you've enjoyed over in the kiddy land for several years. However, what awaits are a series of twists and turns, tunnels and drops that thrill the senses. The only exception being rarely have I witnessed someone puke after exiting IKEA.

When it comes to finding home furnishings that fit into the budget of a young family, IKEA has everything and I'm pretty sure we came close to bringing most of it home with us yesterday. You'll be glad to know we found a carpet, futon, hanging closet storage, mobile, blinds, picture frames, shelving, hooks, and baskets all for the nursery. Needless to say, we are excited to see the nursery come together. After putting several things together late last night, I sat in the room and really for the first time began to visualize the room as the child will know it and how we will come to experience it. I imagine our child, fussing in the crib, gazing at the mobile, crawling on the carpet. It is a wonderful reality to anticipate - an endearing picture in my mind.

Did you say movie? Right.

We had our first birthing class last night. I can't speak completely for Pilar, but this pregnancy has afforded one humorous experience after another. The class is a four session "how to" on giving birth. It was actually very informative and began to answer some questions that many have on their minds in the weeks leading up to child birth. It was just wild to be in a room with that many pregnant women at once. There was a fair share of leaning, and adjusting, swaying and standing throughout the evening. One thing I found humorous was the number of men in the room who function as living breathing body pillows for their spouses - me included. I sat their watching as women tugged and pulled, propped and bent their husbands into whatever position would alleviate their discomfort. One woman in particular is about 25 weeks or so with twins. Watching her made me feel uncomfortable. Suddenly, I found myself twisting, turning, and practicing some deliberate breathing.

What took the cake for the evening however was the final thirty minutes of the class. After a rousing two hour discussion about things like pre-labor, dilation, placenta attachment, pelvic positions, breaking of the waters, and perhaps the most enlightening, after birth - the instructor dimmed the lights and softly said, "now we're going to watch a video."

I'm sorry did you say, "watch a video?" Right.

So I'm a pretty big movie buff. There actually are few things I'd rather do than sit down and relax with a great movie. I like all kinds really. Action adventure. Drama. Comedy. Foreign films. I'm even glad to take in a classic "chick flick" from time to time. But short of the preview for "Chicken Little" last night's feature might possibly be the most mind boggling thing I have seen.

I think the video was called "Preparing for your Delivery" or something to that effect. It started off very serene; covering some basics of pre-labor signs to be aware of. It included touching interviews with mothers and fathers about their experience in labor and the wonder of new life. Then suddenly, with little time to prepare ourselves, we were given a front row seat at the birth of several interviewees.

That's right. Front row. Only these tickets aren't sold at Ticketmaster.

Here comes the humorous part. The looks on the faces of the men and women in that room (mine included I'm sure) were priceless. Almost on cue, everyone tilted their head to one side or another, furrowed their brow, bugged their eyes and dropped their jaw. Some people were covering their mouths. Still other people were shaking their heads as if in some way it would make the reality of the soon to be experience disappear. I think several looked away. A wife punched her husband. One guy splashed water on this face. Several asked for the "check please." The night ended in silence. And as everyone collected their things and made for the door, the final look of desperation was offered from every man to his spouse. As the credits rolled at the video's conclusion - the face of each man universally communicated, "oh honey, what have I done to you? Please don't hate me forever."

Now I must conclude by saying this; though the video was shocking to say the least it was what we all imagined it to be and strangely anticipate. All the workings of labor are so wonderfully mysterious. And the gift of life is so remarkably awesome. With just a few days more than seven weeks remaining, Pilar and I both wish the experience we witnessed last night were only moments away.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://threepeighs.blogspot.com/2005/12/did-you-say-movie-right.html' title='Did you say movie? Approximately eight weeks until delivery. Pilar has been experiencing some pretty significant "braxton-hicks" contractions today. This does not mean she is going into labor. Braxton-hicks is actually the process by which a woman's body trains for labor. The symptoms she is having are moderate contractions that strengthen the muscles necessary for labor and prepare the body for the overall experience. The human body is an amazing creation.

Accompanying this entry is another snap shot into Pilar's progress. This picture was just taken moments ago. Doesn't Pilar look great?! I think she has really done a great job throughout this adventure. I just love her so much and I am so thankful that we are having this experience together! Continue to check in as the weeks build toward January 24th!

Blessings,
Josh

Thanksgiving 2005

Today is Thanksgiving. The one day each year specifically set aside to express our thankfulness for the many ways God provides sustanence in our lives. As we reflect upon the year past, we certainly have much for which to give thanks. We have been especially blessed this year with a healthy mom and healthy baby. For this we express our graditude every moment we are given opportunity. As we look into our lives however, we are very thankful this year for you; our friends. You have been a souce of laughter. You have showered us with your friendship. You hold us up with your support. Happy Thanksgiving. Yesterday we had our 30 week appointment. Mom and baby are healthy. We are well on our way within the third and final trimester. I'm not so sure where the other "mesters" went. As many many parents have shared with us, a new pace of life has begun.

Pilar is feeling well. Each day is a little bit different, but in general she is doing great! The baby is moving ALOT and I think that brings her moments of remarkable joy. However, we are certain this child has settled a winter home in Pilar's rib's. It is not uncommon for Pilar to be sitting contently during a television show, or dinner, or while reading only to be jolted with a judo chop to the rib cage. While uncomfortable, it is humorous. This is a busy baby!

We can't wait to meet Baby Peigh. As we have shared previously, we're waiting to learn the gender at delivery. With each passing day, the anticipation grows to learn if our home will be graced with a little boy or girl. I am officially indifferent of the two. Some days I dream of rough housing with a son and others I look forward to the hugs of a daughter. Regardless, this gift is a fantastic reality.

So at the top of the page you'll notice a picture of Baby Peigh as we know him or her. This is a drawing from a book we've been reading called "Planning Your Pregnancy and Birth." It's just wild to envision this magnificent process God designed. In the next couple of days we'll update with a few pictures of Pilar.

We hope you are all well. Please leave a post so we can hear how you are doing as well!

Blessings,
Josh and Pilar

A Snap Shot of Progress

The first picture was taken at 17 weeks.

The second at 25 weeks.

The third at 32 weeks!

Things continue to progress!

The crib has arrived

I know, I know - it's been so long since we've updated that many of you probably have given up on checking in. We apologize for that. Life has been especially full lately. We have been building a deck, I have started a new job and Pilar has been swamped with the start of a new school year. It seems like it was August just a couple of weeks ago. It is nearly impossible for me to believe that October is nearly half over.

What that means however, is that we are that much closer to January and the arrival of Baby Peigh. This past Wednesday we had another doctor's appointment. Pilar and baby are progressing very well. All is healthy and the heartbeat continues to be fast and strong. If old wives tales are correct and our intuition serves us well, we anticipate a girl baby Peigh. Of course, we have neither found out the gender for sure - nor do we intend to find out - so we are becoming increasingly excited to meet our child!

Last night we conquered what anyone with a child has suggested was "unconquerable" - we put up the crib! We've got a few pictures downloaded and available in our "flicker" (click the picture collage in the right hand margin). Overall I would say it came together nicely in just under an hour.

We have heard so many horror stories about putting cribs together. "It will take you days," several have said. In addition to personal testimonies of disastrous crib experiences, furniture stores go to great lengths to clearly communicate, "we DO NOT assemble cribs." I think this policy is partly motivated by liability and difficultly. However, besides the directions being printed in French (the crib was made in Canada), it was fairly straight forward.

So now we have a place for Baby Peigh to call home. And until his or her arrival, a place for Pilar and I to stand and stare - day dreaming about what is soon to come! Each passing day creates additional anticipation!

Baby Peigh in Motion

We've been waiting for some time now to feel the baby move. Sources suggest a mother should feel the baby move in the womb any time between week 16 and 20. Today we begin week 19. Needless to say, we have been anticipating this moment for some time now. Most difficult has been differentiating between a significant movement and indigestion. I know, it seems a bit crude - discerning child from gas - but it is a very important experience to note. In addition to being an exciting bench mark in any pregnancy, the date a child is first felt moving in the womb can help doctors and midwives pinpoint the projected due date with greater accuracy. So it was with overwhelming enthusiasm that Pilar called me on Friday afternoon with news that her office had been consumed by spontaneous laughter when suddently she felt something new - completely unlike gas - within her womb. Baby Peigh is officially in motion.

A New Feature: Flicker

I am excited to introduce a new feature here at “ThreePeighs.” So that you may enjoy a random selection of pictures from our “ever expanding family,” a “flicker badge” is now located in the right hand column of this page beneath the “Archives” list. Life seems to have gotten pretty busy in the month of August. We are looking forward to things slowing down a bit in September (yeah right!). Nonetheless, we wanted post a picture from around week 17. Not sure how noticable it might be, but to date Pilar has gained approximately five pounds. This picture was taken outside the "Common Man" resturant in Merrimack, NH in celebration of our one year anniversary on August 14th. What a year! Over dinner we fondly remembered our wedding day and all the people who made it so wonderful! We are so blessed by your friendship.

On a different note, Pilar is not as sick any more. A friend from Cross Way called me in the office this afternoon with a simple request, "can I bring dinner over to your house for you guys tonight?" I like to eat. "Sure," I responded. Pilar really has not been feeling well. Friday may have been one of the most difficult days yet - hence our last post "It's not easy being green!" Knowing that things have been challenging, Laurie simply wanted to help make things a bit easier. She did. Dinner was great. It was a gift of wonderful generosity. We are so absolutely appreciative.

Then the phone rang a second time. By now it was 9:00 p.m. Pilar and I had just returned from an exploratory mission in search of the perfect maternity outfit when Laurie called with a second request. "Can Rachel (her 20 year old daughter) and I stop by for a minute? We won't stay long, we just need to drop something off." I was curious. "Sure," I responded for a second time.

Fifteen minutes later, a Ford Explorer slowly came to a stop in front of our house. Pilar and I met Laurie and Rachel in the front yard anxious to know what would bring them out at this time of night with such urgency. "What are you up to?" I asked. With a sheepish grin, Rachel responded, "we couldn't help ourselves, we're just so excited." She proceeded to unload an enormous gift bag from the tailgate of the Explorer. Inside was a treasure chest of baby supplies. Receiving blankets, pacifiers, diapers, soothing bath soap, onesies, wash cloths, baby wipes and a small pair of newborn booties, this was a gift that exceeded anything we could have imagined. Pilar and I are amazed. We are unbelievably grateful. Such warm generosity and sincere anticipation of our coming arrival humbles us. I was and am speechless. All finite nature will allow me to express is "Thank you," but thank you only seems to fall short of how we really feel.

Nonetheless, Laurie and Rachel - THANK YOU so very much! Through something as simple as litte booties we have experienced your enormous capacity to love. We deeply appreciate your generous heart!

It's Not Easy Being Green

Wasn't it Kermit the Frog who used to sing the song "It's not easy being green," after Miss Piggy or some other Muppet character refused to listen to the logic of this well intentioned frog on Sesame Street? It's amazing the truth that carries over into life from the childhood lessons first gleaned from one of Jim Henson's creative teaching moments. Right now in our household one thing is certain, "It's not easy being green."

As I make this entry, my wonderfully pregnant wife has already drifted into a night of well deserved rest. It's been a tough day to say the least. Guess what Kermit, it's not easy being green on our street either. After convincing Pilar that a day off from work would be the best remedy for the nausea she was experiencing this morning, we proceeded to fluctuate from moments of seeming calm to extreme discomfort. I just feel horrible about how Pilar is feeling. Everyone says, “Oh, just wait until after the first trimester – then you will feel great!” People lie. Monday will make fourteen weeks that we have been pregnant – two weeks into the second trimester. I sure hope that wisdom begins to prove it self true because it's not easy being green.

The quest for the holy grail

Buying a house is a drop in the bucket when compared to buying a crib. This is the most belabored decision a family will make in preparation for a child. Do you go with an Italian line, Canadian line, remain faithful to the good ole US of A or sell out entirely to an Asian import? Do you explore convertible cribs that allow for expansion into a toddler bed, day bed, full bed? Should we have a knee release, casters for rolling, flip down entry way? Is it best to have spring support or the newer concept of wooden mattress supports? What style is best? Do we want something more contemporary, perhaps more country, white, cherry, auburn or antiqued finish? And what about the slat width? It has to be safe. And don't forget about the complementary furniture. I think we like this crib or that, but the dresser leaves some to be desired. And we've still not considered the "bumper theme" or mattress pad - there are decisions required there as well. At least when buying a home you have the assistance of a home inspector to help you consider all of your options and troubleshoot your questions. But with this, it seems to be every man and wife for themselves. I think my favorite part of the search is watching couples sit intently in a display of "glider" chairs, sweat dripping from their brow, discussing each aspect of every crib, evaluating as if the decision that is about to be made could possibly affect global hunger or a peace embargo. And I'm careful not to exclude myself from my own revelation; I fit into this camp as well. But nonetheless, I find it all quite humorous and take this moment to laugh even at myself.

Listen in on "Baby Peigh"

Each doctor's appointment seems to encompass more excitement. Tuesday's trip to our health provider was verification of such truth. Pilar and I entered the office with about as much anticipation as I can ever remember having, but no where near able to comprehend what we were about to experience. Even our annoyance from the fact that the doctor was behind in seeing patients and we were busy rushing to appointments of our own couldn't lessen the anticipation.

Eventually the doctor did see us. After weighing in and fielding some questions from the gallery the bell rang and the experience was under way. The technology that is available for pregnancies is really amazing. They call the small piece of equipment used to listen to the heart beat a "doplar." It works about like an ultrasound only is designed for sound versus sight. In addition it can give you a pretty good idea of what to expect from the weather the next day. "Well, let's see here. Your baby's heart rate is 145 and it's going to be partly cloudy tomorrow with a 40 percent chance of showers." I am kidding of course.

The technology that most couples are bringing into the appointments is equally amazing. In an effort to capture this moment indefinitely, I borrowed an Ipod from a friend with a microphone attachment. With this, I would be able to record the heartbeat as we were hearing it and share it with family, friends or simply listen to in a random moment when Pilar and I wander in a day dream about our child. However, as the doctor entered the room, I noticed she glanced at what was in my hand with perplexing look. It was a very quick moment, but her face seemed to say, "oh no - he's going to be one of those dads." You know the kind -- the dad that video tapes a child's first hiccup as if it was the most significant milestone ever recorded in child development. Well she might be right, but what I learned in the next moment was that there better be a gracious learning curve at becoming that kind of dad.

As the doctor began to explore Pilar's belly with the "doplar" device, I prepared my Ipod and steadied my emotions. And then a pronounced "thump, thump, thump, thump" began to sound. I did what any hiccup filming father would do, full of excitement I exclaimed, "Wow! Listen to that! Our child! Amazing!" This is no time for complete intelligible sentences. However, my excitement was returned with correction. "Um, sir, that's your wife," the doctor explained. Pilar laughed. I collected my excitement and hit stop on the recorder. While intriguing, Pilar's heartbeat would only be the preview to the main attraction.

Then out of no where this tiny little sound emerged. Again a "thump, thump, thump," only this time nearly twice as fast as what was first heard. This was what we had waited for. Strong and healthy, the baby stayed in one place long enough to give us about twenty seconds together. It was unbelievably amazing. But it wasn't nearly long enough. I could have sat there listening for hours. It is such a new emotion to feel so connected to someone whom we have neither seen nor heard nor communicated with except in these wonderfully surreal moments. Nonetheless there simply is no one else in this world Pilar and I would have rather been in the presence of than the pounding echo of our child's heartbeat. Then just as quickly as it arrived, it was silent again as our little guy/gal continued exploring its temporary home. With a deep sense of relief that everything was okay, I directed my attention back toward the Ipod in an effort to replay what we had just experienced. To my surprise however, all I found was a paused program ready to record. WHAT? I didn't capture this? How could I screw this up? My first real responsibility as a dad and all I had was the recording of my own voice exclaiming at the sound of Pilar's heartbeat and the doctor's less than compassionate correction. "Hiccup Dad" came with great intentions, but received a strong D+ for performance. I pleaded with the doctor to try again. "I have to get this right," I thought to myself. Unfortunately "Baby Peigh" was too busy jumping rope or whatever babies do in the womb for the doctor to find the heartbeat again. But "Hiccup Dad" is persistent. I called our friend Angela, a midwife with all the connections to all the "right people." She had access to a doplar and was willing to meet us the next evening to give it a second shot. Interestingly enough, this time it was even better. "Baby Peigh" was quite content to keep still for a couple of minutes and we were able to record each and every second. Over the past couple of weeks, more and more friends and family are beginning to access this site. We are thrilled you have come to visit and hope you'll come back to check in often. The official "pregnancy press release" is not yet circulating, but the time is coming soon. Until then, feel free to share this site in leaking the great news with friends and family as we celebrate together!

Tuesday is a big day. We have a 3:15 appointment with our doctor to hear the thumper for the first time. Several weeks ago we had an ultrasound performed in which the baby could be seen (well a slightly fuzzy circular shape could been seen), but not heard. What was clear in that initial visit was the flicker of the heartbeat. Amazing. Completely amazing. However, on Tuesday we will actually hear the heartbeat. During the ultrasound at week five, I remember the technician sharing that the heart rate was 144 beats per minute. It will be interesting to see if the little guy/gal is still keeping such a frenetic pace. Old wives tales are a dime a dozen (maybe even a dime for two dozen) but one such tale suggests the higher the heart rate the greater likelihood it is a girl. After week eleven, our gut suggests the same but our premonitions seem to be as fleeting as our appetites these days.

All is well on the homestead. We continue to rejoice in your friendship and the anticipation of what is to come. Just below this entry (and all entries) to the right is a link for "comments." Please feel free to post comments, suggestions, advice, or a humorous anecdote. We enjoy hearing from you!

My new name: Mr. Scrunchie

I've been holding Pilar's hair now for just about eleven weeks. Mr. Scrunchie they call me. The morning sickness has really been rough. It seems that just about every morning (except for those tricky days when the nausea comes in the evening), I throw back the covers and race to the bathroom to take my position. In some respects it's like the morning call in boot camp -- three seconds to stand at attention at the foot of your bed. Only my attention is directed toward my petite wife cuddling with the toilet bowl pleading for a moment of relief. I feel horrible for her. We keep reminding ourselves that at the end of this adventure it will all be worth it -- it will! The morning drills have not been without comic relief however. I will say, we are doing a fairly good job of maintaining our sense of humor during this stage. Like the morning I heard the drill begin on the main floor of our house, only to hear Pilar rush from the kitchen, through the living room, up the stairs, around the corner, and into the upstairs bathroom. When I asked her why she didn't just rush to the bathroom immediately off the kitchen, she replied, "I wasn't sure if the toilet needed to be flushed." There is always only one response to such a suggestion -- to every suggestion, "okay." Or how about the time we had just laid down to sink into a nights slumber. We were both resting well, moments from signing off of a long productive day, when the alarm sounded commensing yet another drill. Like the husband in that old Santa rhyme, I rose to such a clatter, rushing to the bath room to see what was the matter. Grabbing the trash can I rushed back to the bedroom offering my care, but what did find but my wonderfully pregnant wife sheepishly hovering over a mess slowly creeping everywhere. Her eyes said enough -- like a child who has accidentally broken a father's favorite mug, but her response captured the simplicity, "I didn't make it." Again, one response, "okay."
But I love this adventure. I love every thing about it. It is difficult no doubt. Morning sickness, fatigue, constant changes in appetite and cravings. Not to mention what Pilar is going through. But the anticipation of what will soon be has definately taken hold in our lives.
Ten weeks, four days down. Get ready January 24th, we're on our way!

Two Lines

Eight days ago, life changed. It has changed before, but never as it did on May 16th, 2005. On that day, Pilar and I made a fantastic observation -- we saw two lines. During the procedding weeks, we had seen one line -- but now we were staring at two. It was an amazing reality - Pilar and I are pregnant.
Well, she is more pregnant that I am, but nonetheless I share her excitement just the same. The moments that will follow this will be full of excitement, challenge, and more than a few midnight runs for ice cream. We know nothing about being pregnant. Well, I know less than she does, but nonetheless we're excited to find our way thorugh this adventure.
In coming weeks, we hope this web page will become a window into our excitement for all of our family and friends. As we post pictures, and stories join us in celebrating life!
Love,
Josh, Pilar and baby too!
